I had never been to New Orleans before last week, and my limited acquaintance with the city and its people came secondhand, either from the stories of friends who had been there to rebuild on service trips or from television footage and reports in the news. Like most of America (and the world), I had seen the images of destruction and heard the tales of loss and despair. But, as I quickly learned, destruction and despair do not define New Orleans.

AT&T Teams With Boys & Girls Clubs of America to Create Successful Career Path for Youth
Underscoring the company’s commitment to youth, AT&T announced the national sponsorship of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (BCGA) Junior Staff program, to foster career and leadership skills and provide professional experience for teens. AT&T will underwrite and help implement the Junior Staff program at Boys & Girls Clubs around the country, while several AT&T retail locations welcome select Club members as summer "apprentices."

It’s a Win, Win, Win Situation
Christopher Newport University (CNU) students interested in working with middle school students and volunteering in Newport News Virginia Public Schools got a unique opportunity to participate in an innovative student empowerment program at Dozier middle school. The four CNU student volunteers worked with six Dozier classroom teachers and three student-led groups in the KICK curriculum (Kids Involved in Community Kindness).

Success Story: Aliquippa Alliance for Unity and Development
From 1905 to 1984, the Jones & Laughlin Steel Company (J&L) operated a plant in the town of Aliquippa that provided the main means of economic support for approximately 30,000 residents in southwestern Pennsylvania.  The steel company’s closure in 1984 as part of the overall steel industry collapse proved devastating for the town. In order to bridge this gap, the Aliquippa Alliance of Unity and Development (AAUD) offers many supplemental education opportunities to Aliquippa youth.
